Getting to live in a big community of people which are leaning towards a green life can help make your transition easier. And even if you live in a city where there's not much going on in this field, you can check some Facebook groups that combine individuals focusing on zero waste. You can try to find organizations that raise awareness of the forever deeper problem of waste and pollution. 

To be more, look in the newspaper to see if you can find recycling centers, or local businesses that can help you recycle or reuse the old furniture, kitchen appliances and so on. Look out for the zero waste stores in your city and also look for any events and try to attend to them. 

Surrounding yourself with people that live a sustainable life can be beneficial for you. Some cities have designated certain periods for recycling any electronic appliances, furniture, paper and plastic at no cost. Knowing when these take place will help you get rid of the things you don't need, and be assured that they are recycled properly.
