How To Store Food Without Plastic

When we use plastic to cover food and vegetables, it eliminates the air to dry or damage it. However, as we know that cut flowers need water to survive - so do the veggies ! It turns out by making the environment moist or wet for some produce, they will stay fresh until you need them 🍅

Bread

Bread bought in a bakery with a harder crust will last longer if it is not cut in slices. The best way to store bread is in a dish towel or even in a pillowcase. It can be placed either in a darker place or a wooden bread box.

For sandwich bread it is better to get a tin or a box where the air can't get to it, as it will dry it out. If you seem like you don't eat that much bread, you can always cut in slices, freeze it & then take it out when you want to eat it.

If the bread has already dried out - try making your own breadcrumbs or croutons !

Potatoes & Onions

Potatoes and onions love to be in the darkness, just as they were grown. So the best way how to make them last is to have a bin where you can store them in a dark and dry place.

Cheese

Cheese is similar to bread, as the air dries it out. One way is to put it in an airtight container and keep it in the fridge. Other alternative is to get beeswax wraps which are great not only for cheese, but all produce that you have used half of and need to store other part.

Lettuce & greens

Greens like to be in water, so the best way to keep lettuce like spinach leaves or rucola in a damp cloth, roll them up and keep in the fridge. The moisture will keep them nice and fresh.

Celery, carrots & leeks

For all bigger vegetables such as leeks, carrots and celery - they need water to survive, just like cut flowers. So one great way is to put them in a jar of water and leave on the counter or in the fridge is you have so much space.  I guarantee they will love you for it!

Avocados

I have kept the last thing as it is the best. I have always eaten avocados, and I usually eat only a half of it, and leave the rest in the fridge uncovered. I am sure you all know the brown layer that gets all over the avocado after a few hours. Turns out there is a solution - eat the half which is free of the seed. Leave the avocado half with the seed in the fridge, and it won't turn brown. It will stay in a great condition after a few hours or overnight.
