DAY 16 Zero Waste Challenge: Homemade Nontoxic Cleaner

The cleaning supplies most people are using (bleach, windex, scrubbing bubbles) are highly toxic, and could lead to respiratory problems, skin irritation, reproductive toxicity, nervous system damage, and organ toxicity amongst other health issues.

If you want , think about it from this viewing point

  • Don't use any products on your body or in your home, that you wouldn't otherwise feel safe eating.

  • Think how you get in contact with all these products that contain toxic ingredients. From brushing your teeth to cleaning your cooking stove or any other place you come into contact after you used a toxic cleaning product. If you wouldn't feel safe drinking or eating these products, why use them to clean a surface you cook food on?!

You need an all-purpose nontoxic cleaner? That looks and does the following. Distilled white vinegar made from grains. Completely eliminates bacteria and works perfectly to keep countertops, mirrors, bathroom sinks, tile, etc. sparkling.

You can use it as a stain remover, mildew eliminator, fabric softener, room deodorizer, to unclog drains, and in the rinse cycle to remove soap from clothes!

Be careful using it on marble and granite because it etches, meaning the acidity of the vinegar eats away at the surface of it.

Here's the recipe that you can try:

- Water,
- Distilled white vinegar,
- Scented essential oil (optional),
- Glass spray bottle.

Instructions:
1. Fill a glass spray bottle halfway with water
2.Fill the rest of the way with distilled white vinegar
3.Add in a 15-20 drops of essential oil for scent
4. Spray away!

Challenge:
Try to check all the cleaners you have at home and exchange them for an all purpose cleaner, which will save you money and waste.
