DAY 11 Zero Waste Challenge: Impulsive Shopping

This might be a sensitive topic for most people, since hundreds of millions of people are affected by this issue every year.

Since most of us have bought a product of any kind impulsively, this topic is designed to give you a helping hand in overcoming the urge to buy things. Or at least think 2-3 times before spending your money.

Impulse buying is related to anxiety and unhappiness, and controlling it could help improve your psychological well-being. Firstly, impulse buyers are more social, status-conscious, and image-concerned. Secondly, impulse buyers tend to experience more anxiety and difficulty controlling their emotions, which may make it harder to resist emotional urges to impulsively spend money.

To be more, impulse buyers tend to experience less happiness, and so may buy more as a way to improve their mood. Lastly, impulse buyers are less likely to consider the consequences of their spending; they just want to have it.

I know I have bought many things that are cute and beautiful, but not very useful. However, when we moved to a studio apartment with only one room that consists of our living room, wardrobe, bedroom and office space, we changed our habits rapidly. I must say I love to buy mugs, but two people really need only 3-4 mugs.

Small space has taught us to really make a decision when buying more clothes on sale or anything that is not that necessary. Since then we have saved a lot of money by not buying any bits and bobs in Tiger or any other store that is cheap & amazing.

Another practice we like to do is very simple.

If you buy something new - you have to throw out/give away the old item. If we buy one mug - one has to go. If I buy new shirts, I have to evaluate the others and make sure I don't hold onto the ones I don't want.

Challenges:

  • Time rule when you see something that you want, make yourself wait a certain amount of time before purchasing it.
  • Under no circumstances go to shopping when upset, even though your mind will explain why that is a good idea, you will regret it shortly after, instead take a long walk.
  • Choose wisely your shopping buddies.
  • Give yourself a splurge budget.
  • Only buy things you can return.
  • Don't be fooled by sales.
