DAY 1 Zero Waste Challenge: Water Bottles

Did you know that 80% of the plastic water bottles we buy end up in landfills? An estimate 1,500 plastic bottles end up as waste in landfills or thrown in the ocean every second. A plastic bottle will take around 700 years to start decomposing. Most of the bottled water you buy is just glorified tap water. There are a few brands whose water really comes from springs and mountain streams, but most are just tap water that’s been purified
Plus, as if that wasn't enough, each decomposing water bottle releases harmful chemicals into the soil, thus harming the environment.

The Challenge:

  • You can try a glass or steel reusable water bottle, they are not that expensive to buy and even so, you can use and reuse it for as long as you wish.
  • Try to always be prepared and refill your bottle so that you won't be surprised by remaining without. You can do so from your tap or a public fountain near you, whatever works best for you .
  • Have a spare bottle in your car at all times, you can can always run in a gas station and use the water tap from there.
