DAY 18 Zero Waste Challenge: Homemade Toothpaste

With zero waste challenge we want to encourage you to use the same products for a variety of purposes, this way making it more affective. It is hard to reduce the urge to buy products that are said to help for different reasons. However, as we described yesterday on how to create your own all purpose cleaner, but today we want to share a DIY project for the bathroom.

Toothpaste is a key essential to our day, and there are many great alternatives for a healthy toothpaste. The best one is a toothpaste which you can make at home. To be sure it is a great alternative, we want to explain the benefits of each product for the peppermint toothpaste. Coconut Oil is a well known oral health product for centuries, also known as oil pulling. Coconut oil attacks the harmful bacteria in your mouth. It can reduce plaque buildup, prevent tooth decay and fight gum disease. For these reasons, oil pulling or brushing your teeth with coconut oil can significantly improve oral and dental health.

I tried oil pulling when I had swollen tonsils and for weeks and I was ready to try anything that Google recommends. The process is simple - take 1 tablespoon of oil and let it melt in the mouth, and then swirl it for up to 10 minutes. I must say it is not pleasant and it takes time to get used to. At first I tried to get through 3 minutes, then 5 and built up until 10. After doing so for 10 days I really felt like the oral health overall has increased for my teeth.

Oil pulling is said to be a great alternative to whitening teeth.
Baking Soda also known as sodium bicarbonate, is one of the least abrasive and most effective tooth cleaners on the market today. ... In fact it is less abrasive than most other toothpaste cleaning agents that are sold. One can use baking soda to brush their teeth without buying the toothpaste that contains baking soda. Peppermint Oil is an antiseptic oils which helps to treat pain. It is also great in a mouthwash or toothpaste, which is why they are such prevalent flavors in oral hygiene products. Peppermint and spearmint oils are also very effective in combating bad breath. However it should not be digested, just as any essential oils that are harmful for our digestive system.
