DAY 26 Zero Waste Challenge: Zero Waste City COPENHAGEN

Copenhagen is a green and sustainable city. It is filled with cyclists all year around, even if it is raining. Copenhagen is a city where bikes outnumber cars, and they aim to be the first carbon - free city by 2025.

Today we wanted to explain some things we love about Copenhagen which reflect the sustainability that helps us become zero waste more easily.

1. Reducing food waste with Foodsharing Copenhagen

We have gone to Foodsharing a few times, and the cause for the event is amazing. The idea is that they pick up vegetables and bread from shops and bakeries, which are about to expire. The products may have been too less for the quality of stores. They hold the event every Saturday and Wednesdays.

2. Bazar Stores For Vegetables

All over Copenhagen there are stores that are filled with vegetables that can be bough with no packaging. When the vegetables are in a lower condition, they have a sale to buy 5 or 10 items for a set price. Nørrebro is filled with many stores like this.

3. Repair shop

Yesterday we challenged you to repair anything that is broken in your house. There are repair shops all over Europe, and I encourage you to use the opportunity to fix something for free!

4. Bikes

This is not a secret that Copenhagen is big on bicycles. Even though the weather is not great and it rains a lot, you can always see a bike on the streets. The cycling roads are wide and connect the whole city. It feels very safe when you go with a bike, knowing you have your own space.

5. Recycling Spots

In almost every neighborhood there are places where you can recycle some items and drop them off. The best part about is that there is a place where you can take things and swap. Once when I went there, I took a book and some plates, and got some other books and a mug in return.

6. Swimming in the canals

When I found out about this I was a bit shocked. The canals in Copenhagen are so clean you can swim in them! The water in some areas is so clean that you can see the bottom of the canal. There is even a festival once a year when you can participate in a swimming contest. In summertime you can see people swimming in the harbor and the canal. There is also a company that gives out a free ride with a canoe, as long as you pick up the trash while being on the ride.

7. Compost bin for everyone

About a year ago or so, we were given a green bin with compostable bin liners to throw out the compost. The compost is  collected and converted into biogas for heating, electricity, fuel and agricultural fertilizer.

We would like to hear about your city and how the city is becoming more sustainable. Tell us about your city in the comments!
